Larry at the age of 82 in his last home at the Sara Reed Retirement Center in Erie, Pennsylvania. This photo was taken shortly after his last hospital stay. In spite of pain and other discomforts, he put on a great smile until the very end. He was an award winning amateur photographer, and took up oil painting in the last few years of his life, in spite of the loss of vision in one eye. He was also a real competitor. In 1998 at the age of 82, he asked me to help him prepare the contest entry for the design of a new U.S. Mint coin commemorating Pennsylvania as a signer of the Declaration of Independence. He directed me to draft up his design and submit it to the Governor of Pennsylvania the week before he died. Unfortunately, he did not win the contest. But he was still a "winner" in my heart. |
